Isolation, the availability of drugs and the physical demands of the dental profession contribute to the risk of substance abuse among dentists. These risks are most commonly associated with higher rates of depression, divorce and suicide among dentists, compared with other health professionals.

Members of the DAAC support their peers in all aspects of the recovery process, and all information provided to the DAAC is maintained separately from records pertaining to the South Carolina Dental Association and the South Carolina Board of Dentistry.
